Characteristics of a Professional Journal
When you were still studying for your degree even before you graduated in a certain profession, your professors may have asked you to read different journals about your course to get some references or ideas for studies and research papers. They refer you to these journals because professional journals are magazines that talk about a specific profession and they are composed of different articles from people practicing that same profession as well.
The articles that are printed in these journals are not just ordinary articles about random topics. They are actually the studies that the professionals have made and the articles would also include the results of the studies which were performed. A typical article cannot just be printed as you please. These studies and articles are reviewed by a certain body within your professional organization which will compose of professional peers and colleagues. This is the major difference between a magazine and a journal because the articles found in a magazine are not reviewed by other people within that industry in a professional level.
There are a lot of experts in a particular field that make articles and studies submitted to professional journals for the betterment of their professions. But when they make their own journals, it is important that they follow certain characteristics because their article or study will be reviewed by their peers. If these colleagues and peers do not find your work worthy, then it will not make it to the publication.
• The journal must be Relevant. Because these journals are very specific to certain professions and organizations, it is important that you make an entry based on problems and topics that are very much related to your field of practice. This will make your entry much more in demand and your peers will see the importance of printing it to the publication.
• The journal must be Accurate. This is one reason why your peers and colleagues will do a review of all the entries before adding them to the final journal. They need to make sure that everything that has been stated in your study or article is factual and true. A lot of people especially students will use these studies as references to their own related researches so you should always base your article on true statistics and data without any alterations. The fault of many is that they do small changes in the results just to prove their initial hypothesis which is really wrong and unacceptable.
• The journal must be Innovative. You cannot just make a study that has already been done before. You must think outside the box and look for new problems to solve so that it will improve your profession. This is why professional journals are really important because it helps people updated about what is new in their respective industries. And you will only be able to create a useful entry if you make an innovative study.
